Sam Graddy made his international début at the 1983 Pan American Games, where he was second in the 100 metres and was a member of the gold medal winning USA 4x100 m relay team. In 1984, Graddy won the US National Championships in the 100 metres and won the NCAA 100 m title. At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Graddy was second behind Carl Lewis in the 100 and ran the first leg for the American 4x100 relay, which won the gold medal with a world record time of 37.83. After graduating from the University of Tennessee, Graddy played professional football with the Denver Broncos (1987-88) and the Los Angeles (Oakland) Raiders (1990-92).
