René Lasserre began his career as a centre but later played back-row forward. He was capped 15 times for France, including winning a silver medal at the 1924 Paris Olympics. Lasserre played for multiple clubs, starting with Stade Bayonnais up to 1911, then with Anglet in 1911-12, Aviron Bayonnais from 1912-21, FC Grenoble in 1923-26, and he was with US Cognacaise in 1921-23 and 1926-30. Lasserre won a French title with Aviron Bayonnais in 1913.

Lasserre later worked as a coach in Cognac. During World War I he served as a pilot. He was an accountant in Bayonne, but also ran a café in Grenoble, and a distillery in Cognac. During the occupation of World War II, Lasserre served as mayor of Houlette.
