Reinhold Bachler competed at three Olympic Winter Games, winning a silver medal on the normal hill in 1968. Bachler came to the fore in 1967 when he won six FIS competitions, including one in which he set a world record of 154 metres in ski flying at Vikersund. Bachler competed at the World Championships between 1966-77 with a best finish of ninth on the large hill in 1970. During his career he had 21 victories in FIS competitions, in the era before the World Cup, including four in ski flying. He was world-ranked #3 in 1967 and 1968, and #4 in 1976. He competed in the Four Hills Tournament from 1966-78, with 1976 his best year, when he had two third-place podiums at Oberstdorf and Innsbruck.

After his competitive career ended, Bachler worked as a ski coach from 1982-2000. In 1996 he was given the Silver Medal for Meritorious Service to the Austrian Republic. Bachler had worked as a miner at Erzberg before taking up ski jumping.
