Johnson played for several amateur hockey clubs in Minnesota, among them the Green Bay Bobcats, but he is best known for his many years starring with the Rochester Mustangs. In addition to his 1960 gold medal appearance, Johnson played on the 1964 Olympic team and represented the United States at the World’s Championships in 1958, 1959, and 1961. He played professionally for five seasons (1960-66) in the International Hockey League (IHL), playing on the Minneapolis Millers and Des Moines Oak Leafs, and ended his career playing seven years in the United States Hockey League (USHL) with the Waterloo Black Hawks. A prolific scorer, Johnson scored 218 points in 242 regular-seasons games in the IHL, and 283 points in his USHL career. Johnson was named to the US Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001.
