After an apprenticeship as a decorative painter and his military service, Ludwig Waldschmidt studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in München. In 1922 he co-founded the Palatine Association of Artists. From 1924 he worked as a painter and graphic artist in Berlin, but in 1948 returned to Kaiserslautern where he was among the best-known regional expressionists.
