Italian sculptor Luciano Mercante won the silver medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games in the Art Competitions in the category Medals with Medagliere (Medals), although a gold medal was not awarded in this category. After graduating in Architectural Design in Siena, Luciano Mercante moved to Roma where he attended the School of Art from 1924-27. After an initial phase, during which he dealt with portrait sculptures typical of the 1930s and 1940s, he discovered the art of producing medals and plaques.
