Jeff Kostoff swam the 400 IM for the United States at both the 1984 and 1988 Olympics. He swam in college at Stanford, where he was given five All-American awards. Kostoff was a distance specialist, who held the US high school record for the 500-yard freestyle for 30 years, from 1983-2013, and held the Stanford record for the 1,650-yard freestyle for 21 years, from 1986-2007. While at Stanford Kostoff also ran cross-country, helping them win the 1985 Pac-10 Conference Championship. Kostoff won two medals at the 1983 Pan American Games, a gold in the 1,500 freestyle and a silver in the 400 IM. He competed at the 1982 and 1986 World Championships in the 400 IM, placing fifth and sixth, respectively. Kostoff swam at the Pan Pacifics, in 1982 and 1987, winning two gold medals in 1982 in the 400 IM and 1,500 free. He later started long-distance swimming, winning the 1992, 1996, and 1997 Chesapeake Bay Swim.
