Jarl Malmgren played as a midfielder and, during the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, captained the Finnish national football team. He earned 32 caps in football between 1928-38 and scored seven goals. On the club level he was part of the Helsingfors IF Kamraterna (HIFK) team that won the Finnish championship four times during his career: 1930-31, 1933, 1937. Malmgren was also a talented bandy player, winning three Finnish Championships in 1934-35 and 1938 with HIFK.

Malmgren was a trained surveyor. He achieved the rank of lieutenant and was killed at the age of 33 in Pogost village near Olonets in Russian Karelia during the Finnish occupation of the Continuation War. He is buried in Hietaniemi cemetery in Helsinki.
