James Norris played water polo for the USA at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. He was also a member of the bronze medal winning team at the 1951 Pan American Games. Norris swam for El Segundo High School and later for Southern Cal.
Norris was a Los Angeles County Lifeguard in the early 1950s. He later worked as a fire control and athletic officer on the USS Los Angeles off Korea, Japan and Hong Kong. Norris then taught and coached high school for eight years, before becoming a counselor at El Camino College, a position he held until his retirement in 1981. Norris was President of the Faculty Association at El Segundo High and El Camino College, and President of the California Community College Counselors Association. After retirement, Norris moved to the Santa Ynez Valley where he and his wife started Olive Press Publications.
