James Allen GORDON

James Gordon was third in the 1932 AAU, after having placed fourth in 1931. He competed for Miami of Ohio and the Los Angeles AC. Gordon finished fifth in the 1932 Olympic 400. Gordon led Miami to three consecutive Buckeye Conference track championships from 1929-31, and was Buckeye Conference Champion all three years in the 400. Gordon also played football at Miami and earned three varsity letters.

After graduating from Miami in 1931, Gordon coached for eight years at Cleveland West Technical High Schools and then two years at Lehigh University. He then earned a masters’ degree in 1935 from The Ohio State University, and returned to Miami in 1946 as an assistant coach in track, football, and basketball. In 1948 he became athletic manager and in 1950 was named chairman of the physical education department. During his tenure at Miami he wrote Track and Field: Changing Concepts and Modern Health and Physical Education Department. Gordon was inducted into the Miami of Ohio Sports Hall of Fame in 1970.
