His career lasted until 1996 and saw him play with the Tampa Bay Rowdies (1982-83), the San Diego Sockers (both indoors and outdoors), the Los Angeles Heat (1986, 1989), Red Star Paris (1990), Örgryte IS (Sweden) (1990-91), Al-Ittihad (Saudi Arabia) (1992), the Los Angeles Salsa (1994), and he finished his career with CD FAS in his native El Salvador in 1994-96.

Both his father and grandfather had placed for FAS (Club Deportivo Futbolistas Asociados Santanecos). Perez later became a soccer coach, first at the University of San Francisco and then with the San Francisco Victory. He was elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2008.
