Hanns Hoyer attended art schools in Krefeld, Düsseldorf and Zürich before studying at the Akademie für Graphische Künste und Buchgewerbe (Academy of Graphic Arts and Books) in Leipzig. In 1919, he became a teacher at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin (Berlin State School of Fine Arts) and held this position until 1948. Hoyer designed book plates, lettering and advertisements and developed the new fonts Hoyer-Fraktur and Hoyer-Schönschrift.
