In her Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, Grace Brown narrowly missed out on a medal – a bronze – by just seven seconds. Three years later, at the Paris 2024 Olympics, she came back stronger, dominating the women’s individual time trial to capture the top prize – a gold medal.

She also created a bit of history. Grace Brown won Australia's first gold medal in road cycling at the Olympics in 20 years and became the first Australian to win the event at the Summer Games.

Born on July 7, 1992, in Camperdown, a town in Victoria, Australia, Grace Brown was a cross-country and middle-to-long-distance runner in her early years. She trained at the Box Hill Athletics Club in Victoria, one of Australia’s most successful athletic clubs in her formative years.

However, Brown's athletic career was plagued by multiple stress fractures and injuries, prompting her to switch to cycling at the age of 23, drawn by its lower impact on the body.

Brown initially joined a Melbourne-based riding club, but it wasn't long before she advanced to competitive road cycling, making her debut at the 2016 Australian Championships.

She began her racing career with Holden Team Gusto Racing in the National Road Series. Following her impressive performances, including a bronze medal in the Road Race National Championship and winning the Oceania Time Trial title in 2018, she was awarded the prestigious Amy Gillett Cycling Scholarship. This opportunity took her overseas to join the Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling Team.

In 2019, Brown upgraded to the World Tour with Mitchelton-Scott while also winning her first time trail national title. A year later, she won the Brabantse Pijl in Belgium, her first European success, and finished second at Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

With second-placed finishes in both the road race and time trial at the National Championships, Brown’s 2021 season progressed with her first World Tour victory at Brugge-De Panne in April, followed by a third place in the Tour of Flanders.

Notably, at Tokyo 2020, Brown was the co-leader of the Australian women’s road race cycling team with Amanda Spratt but eventually finished 47th. She then missed out on a medal on her Olympic debut by just seven seconds in the time trial event.

Following a shoulder injury in 2022, Brown came back to win her second Australian time trial title and a silver medal in the road race. Later, she also won her first gold medal in the women’s time trial for Australia at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

She won back-to-back silver medals in the time trial at the 2022 (Wollongong) and 2023 (Stirling) Road World Championships.

Her 2023 season, meanwhile, also included a third time trial national championship victory along with her first World Tour stage race win, beating compatriot Amanda Spratt, a three-time world championships medallist, in the Tour Down Under.

Brown started the 2024 season by securing her fourth national time trial title and by winning Liège-Bastogne-Liège to become the first Australian woman to win one of the ‘Monuments’ races.

Ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics, Brown announced that she would retire from the sport at the end of the season.

In her second Olympic appearance, Brown competed in the women’s individual time trial, clocking 39:38.24 in wet conditions to win the gold medal at Paris 2024. She finished a minute and a half ahead of Great Britain’s Anna Henderson, whom she had also edged out to claim the top prize at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Grace Brown has won the Female Road Cyclist of the Year, awarded by Cycling Australia, on three occasions - 2020, 2021 and 2022.
