Apart from being a member of the teams that set world records in both freestyle relays at the Tokyo Olympics, Gary Ilman also placed fourth in the individual 100 metre freestyle after setting new Olympic records in the heats and semi-finals. Ilman, who represented the Santa Clara SC, was also a member of the team that won the 800m free relay at the 1963 Pan-American Games, and won a relay gold medal at the 1965 Universiade. Ilman won the 1965 AAU outdoors 100 metre freestyle title. He later became a coach, working with the Montréal Athletic Club, as an assistant at the University of Alabama, and then head coach at Colorado State. He left coaching in 1981 to enter the electronics industry.
