Gabriele Salviati acquired a degree in ancient literature and scriptures, but he had developed a passion for athletics and joined the club Virtus Bologna at the age of 12. After having some success in the junior ranks, his first important victory came in 1930 at the Italian Students Championships in Firenze, with a time of 11 seconds flat. In 1932 he took part in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles running the second leg of the 4×100 metre relay, winning the bronze medal together with Giuseppe Castelli, Ruggero Maregatti and Edgardo Toetti.
