When Fabio dal Zotto competed at the Montréal Olympics, he was just 19 years old and still studying in secondary high school. In the final of the foil event, he tied with Aleksandr Romankov, but soundly defeated him 5-1 in the barrage. He also took home the team silver. While Dal Zotto won four World Championship medals over the next years (including three silver with the team), he never reached his Olympic level of 1976 again. He missed the Moscow Games after leaving a training camp over an argument with a team mate, and was expelled from the 1981 World Championship team for undisciplined behaviour.
