Weightlifter Eugen Deutsch set one light-heavyweight press world record in 1934. The same year, and also in 1935, he won the silver medal at the European Championships. At the 1936 Berlin Olympics he won the silver medal, beaten by the defending champion Louis Hostin. Deutsch was initially disqualified for missing all three snatches, but on appeal, the jury re-instated one of his snatches which moved him into second place, to the consternation of the non-German competitors. From 1934-36 Deutsch won three national titles. He was killed in action at the Western front shortly before the end of World War II.
