Bart Brentjens was a mountain biker who won the first mountain bike gold medal for men at the 1996 Olympic Games with a long solo effort in the cross country event. Earlier, Brentjens had won the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup (1994) and the cross country world title (1995). Additionally, Brentjens has won two silvers and three bronzes at the World Championships, of which three were won in the marathon. In 2004, the 10-time Dutch champion claimed a second Olympic medal, coming third in Athens.
