A world championships silver medallist, a Commonwealth Games silver medallist, an Asian champion and a two-time Olympian by the time she turned 24, Indian wrestler Anshu Malik is looking at a chequered career.
At the 2021 World Wrestling Championships in Oslo, Norway, Anshu Malik created history when she beat Ukrainian Solomiia Vynnyk to enter the final of the women’s 57kg category.
It made her the first Indian woman to reach the final of the world wrestling championships, going further than illustrious names like Geeta Phogat and Vinesh Phogat.
Anshu Malik would eventually end up with the silver medal, after losing in the final to two-time Olympic medallist and three-time world champion Helen Maroulis of the USA.
The fact that she competed with a long-standing elbow injury and a knee injury sustained in the quarter-finals made the medal even more memorable. After the final, Anshu Malik had her hand in a sling.
Born on August 5, 2001, in the village of Nidani in Haryana, wrestling ran in Anshu Malik’s blood.
