A coach at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign offered her the opportunity to experience a racing chair. "I was introduced to Adam Bleakney, who commented that I had really long arms, which apparently is good for wheelchair racing. I brushed it off for a little while because I was like, 'I'm not really sporty'. Looking back on it, I kind of thought that I just couldn't be, not really that I didn't have an interest in it. I was new to Champaign and I was looking for a way to meet new people. I started going to track practice shortly into my freshman year and instantly loved it. It probably truly was a social thing for me." (Applied Health Sciences at Illinois YouTube channel, 30 Sep 2019; Athlete, 17 Jul 2017)

In 2019 she spoke about the responsibilities she felt came with being an older member of the US Para athletics team, which tie into her professional teaching activities. "One of the really cool things about our team is that we are so diverse in backgrounds and past experiences and then we also have a wide range of ages. I think we learn from each other, kind of back and forth. I think there's certainly something to be said about being one of the veterans or seasoned members of the team and getting to share some of your experiences with our younger athletes. I certainly learnt a lot from those older than me. I was really fortunate that I had some really great mentors who took me under their wing and made it little bit less overwhelming. I remember that really fondly and I think that that's something I certainly try to carry forward as our new athletes come through." (Applied Health Sciences at Illinois YouTube channel, 30 Sep 2019)

She serves as an adjunct professor at the American College of Financial Services in the United States of America. She is involved in teaching courses that introduce students to physical impairments, as well as coaching education and athlete identity. (theamericancollege.edu, 01 Jun 2020, 16 Feb 2019)

After completing a bachelor's degree in communication and media studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2011, she completed a master's degree in sport management at the same university in 2014. She then began a doctorate [PhD] in sport management at the same university. (LinkedIn profile, 01 Jan 2020; Athlete, 17 Jul 2017)
