Her younger brother Drew Hildebrandt competed in wrestling for Central Michigan University, and finished second at the 2014 Cadet and Junior National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota, while her older brother Cory Hildebrandt wrestled for Lakeland University in Plymouth, Wisconsin. Her younger sister Amy Hildebrandt was appointed head coach of the women's wrestling programme at Trine University in Indiana in 2020. Her father Chris Hildebrandt played tennis and football at Drury University in Missouri, while her mother Nancy was a cheerleader at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Her partner, Donothan Bailey has represented the United States of America in artistic gymnastics, including at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. She began wrestling by joining a boys team at Penn High School in Mishawaka, IN, United States of America. At first her parents did not want her to wrestle, but changed their minds after her middle school wrote them a letter saying that she should compete. "When I started wrestling, my mum would come over to watch practices with just me and my coach and I would end up wrestling her. This sweet woman let me beat her up at 05:30 in the morning, for the sake of my improvement." (cm-life.com, 06 Feb 2019)
:
Her brothers Cory and Drew competed in the sport and inspired her to start. "They were successful almost immediately. I think that helped me believe in myself just to even begin wrestling." (cm-life.com, 06 Feb 2019)

"I train two times a day from Monday to Friday, do a workout on Saturday morning and something like yoga on a Sunday. On a typical week day, I train from 09:00-11:00 and then 14:30-18:00 before having a sauna and getting home at 20:00. As well as mat practice, I lift weights three days a week and do cardio every single day against my coaches' wishes. If I could be on a treadmill all day I would be. My brain and heart wants to be a marathon runner but my knees and legs don't." (spartancombat.com, 04 Dec 2020)

She likes to listen to the band AC/DC before competing and has used the group's 'Thunderstruck' track as her walkout song. "It's symbolic of combat sports. You want to fight even if you don't fight at all." (Rudis Twitter profile, 13 Sep 2020)

"I don't care who you are, when that whistle blows, I'm there to fight. And I have nothing but respect for the person who showed up to do the same damn thing." (Instagram profile, 03 Mar 2020)
:
In 2018 she was named USA Wrestling's Women's Wrestler of the Year. She was also named Outstanding Wrestler at both the 2018 Pan American Championships in Lima, Peru, and the 2018 US Open in Las Vegas, NV, United States of America. (teamusa.org, 01 Dec 2019, 01 Apr 2019)

General Interest

General
WEIGHT CHANGES
In January 2020 she announced her intention to compete in the 50kg class at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, dropping down from the 53kg category. "With my safety in mind, the coaches and I agreed that I would go down only if I could do it carefully, slowly and wisely. The transition has been about cleaning up my diet a little more, even though I already eat pretty clean. It might also mean that I have to add an extra cardio session here or there and maybe wear a long-sleeve shirt instead of a short-sleeve." She had previously decided to drop down to 53kg from the 55kg category in 2017 after dislocating her elbow. "When I dislocated my elbow I had so much time to reflect on what I wanted to do and what I needed to do to get there. It shuffled me on to changing my diet and led me on to changing who I hung out with because I didn't want to go out eating and drinking anymore. Every day, one by one, more good habits fell in place. The wake-up call was a little blessing in disguise, I guess." (Twitter profile, 17 Nov 2020; wreaperwrestling.com, 04 Jan 2020; USA Wrestling, 19 Jan 2019; teamusa.org, 23 Jun 2018)

SISTER SUPPORT
She describes her sister Amy Hildebrandt, who was appointed head women's wrestling coach at Trine University in 2020, as a key member of her entourage. "We have these moments where it's like maybe for a month she's the person I'm completely leaning on. She's a professional at this point in Sarah breakdowns. As we get closer to competitions, especially the big, important ones, I am very impatient. She knows when I'm getting to that point of getting short on patience. She's so good at handling that and she's really just a happy person to be around. That counters me being uptight. She calms me down and that puts me into a good mindset. On top of that, she's a philosophy major so I lucked out because I got my therapist." (trackwrestling.com, 29 Oct 2020)

COMPETITIVE PAY
She believes female wrestlers should be paid a fair fee for participating in professional competitions. "As a woman and, I feel, one of the top wrestlers in the US, it's my responsibility to accept the cards where I'm adequately paid because that sets a precedent for women who will follow me to make sure they are paid what they are worth and deserve." (Track Wrestling Twitter page, 26 Oct 2020)
