General Interest

General
Host nation Japan are making their fourth Olympic appearance in Tokyo and are looking to complete their set of Olympic medals, having won bronze in 2016 and silver in 2012.

In Rio in 2016 the Japanese team recorded victories over Poland and Austria to reach the semifinals where they were narrowly beaten 3-2 by Germany, before defeating Singapore to claim bronze. At the 2012 Games in London they made it to the final without losing an individual match, where they lost 3-0 to the People's Republic of China. In Beijing in 2008, Japan finished fourth after defeat in the final of the bronze medal play-offs to the Republic of Korea.

At the world championships, between 2001 and 2018 Japan only failed to win a medal at one edition [2012] of the tournament. They were runners-up at three consecutive editions from 2014 to 2018, losing the final to the Chinese team on all three occasions, and claimed bronze at five editions from 2001 to 2010. In the mid-20th century Japan were a global powerhouse, winning eight world titles from 1952 to 1971.

At the Asian championships Japan have finished on the podium at eight out of nine editions of the tournament from 2003 to 2019, but have not claimed gold in that time. They won three consecutive Asian Games gold medals from 1958 to 1966, but have not returned to top step of the podium since then. Most recently they were eliminated by the Chinese team in the quarterfinals of the 2018 Games in Indonesia.
