He suffered a partial A4 pulley [ligament] tear in his left ring finger in early 2017. He recovered in time to win gold at the 2017 US National Bouldering Championships in Salt Lake City, UT, United States of America several weeks later. (climbing.com, 06 Feb 2017)

He was introduced to indoor climbing by a friend at a local club. "I think I'm suited to climbing because of my natural athletic tendencies. You need a lot of coordination, fast-twitch reactions, fast thinking and problem-solving." (petzl.com, 22 Dec 2017; olympicchannel.com, 14 Jan 2021)

"Having a goal of a placement in a competition doesn't really help you much. You could be the best climber out there, but still not take first. I set my goals more towards personal perfection and how I feel about my climbing after the competition. It's a really nice balance of a physical and mental challenge. It has such an element of problem solving, and in order to be mentally prepared for that you need to be calm-minded but also kind of fierce at times I think." (rockandice.com, 07 Feb 2017; byu.edu, 07 Dec 2018

In 2016 he received the North Face Young Gun Award from USA Climbing. (snewsnet.com, 11 Feb 2016)

General
OLYMPIC FORMAT
Of the three Olympic climbing disciplines he prefers lead and bouldering. "The fact that you have to compete in all three disciplines [at the Olympic Games] is not ideal. I think I'm not alone in the climbing community when I say I'm speed climbing because I have to." (byu.edu, 07 Dec 2018)

STUDIES ON HOLD
He began studying computer science at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT, United States of America, but dropped out after two semesters to pursue climbing full-time. "Essentially I just wasn't doing well enough to justify going to school at that time so I told myself I'll pursue climbing for now and maybe later in my life I'll have a better drive, a better discipline, to go to school and do well." (27 Jun 2018)
