She began sailing at age seven. (49er.org, 2021)
:
"Living on an island [Notteroy, in Norway] surrounded by water made it natural for me to try out sailing, although my parents were into all kinds of other sports. Sailing grew fast on me and I soon started competing at a national level, and it didn't take long before I won my first regatta. I enjoyed the competitive side of sailing along with the feeling of learning and mastering all types of wind and weather. By the age of 12, I had already travelled and competed at several international regattas." (helenemariesailing.com, 15 Feb 2021)

To win gold at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. (dagbladet.no, 05 Jul 2021)
:
"As the competitive and adventurous person I am, I couldn't be happier doing what I love and at the same time travel the world. For me, sailing is still the same as when I was a kid. I love being on the water, improving and facing new challenges. The good thing with sailing - you learn new things every time you hit the water. Every day is different." PARTNERSHIP
She and crewmate Marie Ronningen have been sailing together since early 2013. "As a team, we bring out the best in each other. To be good at sailing you need to process as much information as possible and make quick decisions based on what you have. To be able to do so, having four eyes looking around is key." (helenemariesailing.com, 15 Feb 2021)

PREPARING FOR TOKYO
She says that while preparing for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, she and partner Marie Ronningen have paid particular attention to the challenging weather conditions they are expecting in Japan. "Our Olympic committee has built a climate room, as they call it, where we do exercises inside and we have the kind of temperature and humidity we can expect in Tokyo. It's to prepare your body for the heat and to see how much water you lose, and how much you have to rehydrate after a session." (sailingscuttlebutt.com, 01 Jul 2021)
