HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
He comes from a family of farmers and worked on a farm in Fiji from age six. "As soon as you can hold a knife, you go straight to the farm. After school, my dad would say, 'Make sure you plant 20 cabbages or 20 taro before you go to rugby'." He also worked in the gold mines in Vatukoula, Fiji. He was offered a job in the gold mines on the advice of a rugby coach, who noticed his physical attributes while playing rugby in his village on the island of Taveuni, Fiji. He then moved to the Fijian mainland to work in the mines and play rugby. "It was tough [working in the mines], really tough, but I had to provide for my family. I worked at the mines for seven months, before the 2011 Junior World Cup in Italy [rugby union]. You dig holes, drill and collect gold. You are scared when you go down because you never know if you'll make it out alive again. You could go down maybe 100m. You jump in the lift with your helmet and overalls at 07:00, and come back up at 15:30." (dailymail.co.uk, 02 Aug 2020)
