He began diving at age seven in Yucatan state, Mexico. He started swimming at age three and also tried football, basketball, and gymnastics. "I was restless and just wanted to do twists and jumps. General Interest

He plans to retire from competitive sport following the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "I have to prepare for my life after my career, although I will stay involved in sports." (, 10 Sep 2018;, 12 Aug 2018)

He was named a Role Model Athlete for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. "Being an Olympic athlete is a real honour and a responsibility within the country. Alongside his family he runs a real estate company and a healthcare business in Merida, Mexico. In 2021 he also ran for one of the federal deputy seats representing Merida in the Mexican Chamber of Deputies. Since 2009 he has been an athlete member of the Mexican army. In May 2021 he had reached the rank of lieutenant and has participated in humanitarian aid missions during natural disasters in Mexico.
