General Interest

From 2014 to 2018 he had a number of problems with injuries which affected his hamstrings, back, hip, abductors and ankles. "In five years, I was only healthy for a few months and could never train properly. In spite of everything, I never thought of giving up. There were moments of despair, hopelessness and helplessness, of course. However, I was never tempted to give up. What's more, I don't know where I got my strength from, but each injury forced me to reinvent myself, to introduce changes in my technique." (, 30 Apr 2020;, 27 Sep 2019)

He was relieved when the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo were postponed by 12 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as it gave him certainty to plan ahead. "It was very hard at the time when there was the uncertainty [on whether the Games would be postponed], and then it was a relief at the moment when it was finally said that the Games were moved, we were clear about things and we knew that the 2020 season would be dedicated to fixing technical and physical issues. I do not consider that the postponement is going to benefit or harm me, I simply think that you have to adapt to the reality in which we live and you have to do everything possible to get the best out of it at all times."
