General Interest

The People's Republic of China first competed at the Olympic Games in 1932 under the name of the Republic of China. The NOC would compete in 1936 and 1948 under the same name, but participated as the People's Republic of China at the 1952 Games in Helsinki. The People's Republic of China then did not compete at the Olympic Games for another 32 years, but has sent a delegation of athletes to each edition of the Games since 1984.

The People's Republic of China has won more Olympic medals in table tennis and badminton than any other NOC. Wang Nan, who competed at three editions of the Games between 2000 and 2008, is the most successful table tennis player from any nation at the Olympic Games with a total of four gold medals and one silver medal to her name. In badminton, there are no fewer than nine Chinese athletes who have won two Olympic titles. Gao Ling, who competed at three Olympic Games between 2000 and 2008, has the most total medals [four] of any badminton player from any NOC.

At the 2012 Games, artistic gymnast Zou Kai became the People's Republic of China's first five-time Olympic gold medallist. He had claimed three gold medals in front of a home crowd four years earlier in Beijing, and then secured his fourth [men's team event] and fifth [floor exercise] in London. Four years later at Rio 2016, Zou was joined on five Olympic gold medals by divers Wu Minxia and Chen Ruolin. Chen's gold medal haul includes three consecutive titles in the women's 10m platform synchro, while Wu's five gold medals came over four editions of the Games between 2004 and 2016. Wu's total haul of seven Olympic medals - she also won a silver medal in 2004 and a bronze medal in 2008 - is more than any other Chinese athlete.

Shooter Wang Yifu is the Chinese athlete with the most Olympic appearances. He competed at six editions of the Games between 1984 and 2004, winning a total of six medals [two gold, three silver, one bronze]. Another shooter, Tan Zongliang [1996-2012], and fencer Ye Chong [1988-2004] have participated in the Olympic Games on five occasions.

The People's Republic of China finished third on the medal table at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, behind the United States of America and Great Britain. Four athletes won two gold medals at the Games - divers Chen Aisen and Shi Tingmao, and table tennis players Ding Ning and Ma Long.
