The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) today announced changes to the format of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay, which was due to take place on public roads in the city of Osaka on 13 and 14 April.
Osaka Prefecture today declared a medical state of emergency, asking residents to refrain from going out and from undertaking any unnecessary travel. Given these circumstances, the Osaka prefectural authorities today requested Tokyo 2020 to hold the Osaka segment of the Olympic Torch Relay in the Expo ’70 Commemorative Park rather than on public roads. In accordance with this request, Tokyo 2020 will arrange for the Osaka segment of the relay to be run in the Expo ’70 Commemorative Park and will implement all necessary measures to ensure a safe environment for all torchbearers who wish to run there, with no spectators being admitted on either day. Other details will be announced as soon as they are decided.
Tokyo 2020 will continue to work closely with Osaka Prefecture and the local task force for each prefecture due to host an Olympic Torch Relay segment in order to ensure that these events are safe and secure for all local communities.
