Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games Ticket Lottery Starts Today

For those who live in Japan, here's your chance to watch super-abled athletes compete in next year's Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Starting today, you can apply to participate in the initial ticket lottery to watch outstanding performances from the world's best Para athletes. The Paralympic Games will feature more than 4,400 athletes over 22 sports and 540 events.

Initial lottery

The lottery for the initial offering of Paralympic Games tickets will run from 22 August to 9 September 2019 for residents of Japan.

Millions of affordable tickets will be on offer for Paralympic events that the whole family can enjoy.

  • Seats at competitive events will be priced from just JPY 900 and will cost no more than JPY 7,000
  • Tickets for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies will cost from JPY 8,000 up to JPY 150,000.

To mark the "One Year to Go" milestone to the Paralympic Games, a special programme will be celebrated on 25 August.

What to watch out for

There are 22 featured sports in the Paralympic Games. It will run over 12 days from the day following the Opening Ceremony on 25 August until 6 September.

Here are some of the sports events to watch out for:


Athletics, which saw Japan win 16 medals in at the 2017 World Championships, including two golds, will enliven the new Olympic Stadium each day from 28 August to 5 September, with tickets ranging in price from JPY 2,000 to JPY 6,500.


At Rio 2016, Japan's Paralympic swimmers won seven medals; tickets for Paralympic swimming events at Tokyo 2020 will cost between JPY 2,000 and JPY 7,000.

Wheelchair Rugby

During the middle phase of the Games, on the first Sunday after the Opening Ceremony, the highlight will be the wheelchair rugby final with tickets costing between JPY 3,200 and JPY 4,000. There are increasing expectations for the Japan team, which recently defeated the Rio 2016 gold medal winners Australia, becoming world champions in 2018.

Wheelchair Tennis

The men's world number two and women's world number three in wheelchair tennis are both from Japan. Tickets for these events will cost between JPY 1,800 and JPY 6,500.

How to Apply for Tickets

Residents of Japan must apply for tickets online via the Tokyo 2020 Official Ticket Website. Pre-registration on the TOKYO 2020 ID portal is necessary to enter the lottery; this can be done at . The lottery results will be announced on 2 October, with payments due by 15 October.

This represents the best opportunity for residents of Japan to get the tickets they want for the Paralympic Games. However, should they not be successful, they will still be able to request tickets during the second lottery, which will commence in the early 2020.

A further phase of ticket sales will start in the spring of 2020, offering first-come, first-served sales on a global basis. Details will be announced later.

Overseas Residents

People living outside of Japan will be able to purchase tickets through Authorised Ticket Resellers (ATRs). ATRs are official sales channels outside of Japan appointed by the National Paralympic Committees of the individual countries and regions and approved by Tokyo 2020, and have the exclusive right to sell Games tickets in agreed countries and regions. The sales launch date in each territory may vary depending on each ATR's sales plans and schedules.
