Tokyo 2020 fencing day 1: Fight for titles in women's individual épée and men's individual sabre

With gold medals in the women's individual épée and men's individual sabre up for grabs, here’s everything you need to know about the first day of the Olympic fencing competition at Tokyo 2020 on 24 July 2021.

What’s happening today?

It's the first day of the fencing competition at the Tokyo 2020 Games and the action starts at 9am (local) at the Makuhari Messe Hall B in Chiba Prefecture with individual tables in the women's individual épée and men's individual sabre, followed by the quarterfinals.

The evening session gets underway from 18:00 with semi-finals in both events, followed by the bronze and gold medal contests.

Who should I expect to see?

The Rio 2016 silver and bronze medallists in the women's individual épée, Italy's Rossella Fiamingo and China's SUN Yiwen, will be looking to upgrade their medals and get on top of the podium.

The two-time Olympic champion in the men's individual sabre, Hungary's Aron Szilagyi, will be hoping to add another title to his collection, but he will face challenges from Rio 2016 silver and bronze medallists, United States' Daryl Homer and South Korea's KIM Junghwan.
