Athletes around the world have been busily preparing themselves with less than 70 days until the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2021.

Tokyo 2020 has been speaking to several athletes whose journey to the Olympic and Paralympic Games is gathering pace. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe was also in Tokyo to survey the athletics facilities ahead of this summer's Olympics.

The 2019 World Championship silver medallist Fairy Japan, us a taste of just how they will perform at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 in 2021 while several teams from Tokyo Women’s College of Physical Education also performed incredible routines.

The first international competition was held at the Olympic Stadium as 420 athletes, including the likes of five-time Olympic medallist Justin Gatlin, took to the track and field as was part of the World Athletics Continental Tour as preparations ramp-up ahead of the Olympic Games in 2021.

Why should the Olympics take place? Because they are the premier sporting event in a four-year cycle.

They are very much more than a sporting event.

The World Athletics President gave a thumbs-up to Tokyo 2020 preparations for the Games athletics competition, saying athletes don't want to "sit out the dance" despite Covid-19 challenges.

People have overcome a lot of adversities. If they get athletes to the Games and in good shape, it's such a credit that could even happen, because there have been so many hurdles that had to be overtaken to do it.

The final Olympic qualification regatta begins on 15 May offering a last chance for rowers to qualify for Tokyo 2020. But for many in the sport, it has been a long, challenging journey to a Games that were due to begin over nine months ago.
