Bill Droegemuller of Northwestern won the pole vault at the NCAA in 1927, but in 1928 he was destined to place second in the major meets. He finished as runner-up to Ward Edmonds of Stanford at the NCAA, then placed second to Lee Barnes at the AAU and took the Olympic silver medal behind the United States' Sabin Carr. After graduation, Droegemuller attended Northwestern Medical School and then established himself as an ophthalmologist in Chicago before retiring to Arizona, where he continued to have a small practice.
