Биография

Rein Aun, whose father died when he was just 13, attended a special school for young athletes as a teenager. He appeared to be a very talented distance runner, yet elected to compete in the decathlon. When commencing his studies, he moved from Tallinn to Tartu, and competed for VSS Kalev. His performance at the 1964 Olympics was outstanding, improving on his personal best score by more than 800 points to win the silver medal. It would remain his only international podium, although he finished fifth at the 1966 European Championships. He improved his own best to 7,898 points in 1968, but failed to finish the Olympic decathlon later that year. Aun was the Soviet decathlon champion in 1967-68, while taking silver in 1964 and between 1960-69 was a 10-time Estonian SSR champion in various track & field events, including the decathlon in 1961. He also won an Estonian SSR title in volleyball in 1958. After finishing his sports career, Aun worked as an athletics coach with Kalev and was the secretary-general of the Estonian Athletics Association.

Personal Best: Dec – 7898 (1968).
