John Basil DICKINSON

Basil Dickinson attended Sydney Boys High School, graduating in 1932. In 1936 he was the second-ranked triple jumper going into the Berlin Olympics, but struggled there with an injury and finished only 16th in the triple jump. The injury caused him to withdraw from the long jump. Dickinson was Australian champion in the triple jump in 1934 and 1936-37. He won two bronze medals at the 1938 British Empire Games, in the long and triple jumps. In 1939 Dickinson won the New South Wales decathlon title. His career was ended by World War II, in which he served in the Australian Army. After the war he entered the insurance industry, but he was also involved in Australian athletics administration for many years, serving as chief judge of the jumping events at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. At his death in 2013, Dickinson was the oldest living Australian Olympian.
