Race walker Herbert Dill placed sixteenth at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He won the silver medal at the 1938 European Championships in the 50 km Walk, and was also German Champion that year in the event. He was killed in action during World War II as a lieutenant near Nothum in Luxembourg in the Battle of the Bulge. He rests in the military cemetery at Sandweiler, Luxembourg in a so-called "comrades grave."
