Although born in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Florence MacDonald’s family moved to Boston when she was young, and she eventually competed for the Boston Swimming Association. In 1928, she set an American record in the 800 metres with her time of 2:22.6 at the Olympics, although she had placed only third at the US Olympic Trials in the event. In 1929 she was third in the 220 yards at the AAU Championships, and second in that event at the AAU Indoors.
After marrying Peter Campbell and raising two children, MacDonald-Campbell worked as a nurse at the Boston University School of Medicine for over 25 years.
