Aernout van Lennep was the winner of the Dutch military championships in 1931, doubling as the trials for the Olympics. But his top horse Luftikus foundered and he was forced to ride Henk. In Los Angeles he was the last finishing rider, which was enough to lead the Dutch team to silver, as only two of the competing four teams finished. Van Lennep was a career officer in the artillery, eventually rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel (1948-53). During World War II he was a prisoner-of-war in Germany.
