Биография

Aarne Honkavaara was considered the best Finnish hockey player of the 1940s and early 1950s. He played his entire Finnish career with Ilves Tampere, starting in 1943, playing through the 1951-52 season. He was then out a year with a broken leg sustained in a game against Poland, and then coached for three years, before returning to Ilves to play from 1956-58. He also briefly played a couple exhibition games in Canada with Sarnia Sailors.

Honkavaara earned 47 caps for Finland, playing at the 1952 Winter Olympics and the 1949 and 1951 World Championships. The Arne Honkavaara Trophy is awarded to the leading regular season goalscorer in the Finnish SM-Liiga. Honkavaara is a member of the International Ice Hockey Hall of Fame and the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame.
