SOCHI 2014 TORCH RELAY

Using the sun’s rays and a parabolic mirror, the flame was lit by a high priestess at the Temple of Hera. The priestess then used the flame to ignite the torch of the first runner of the Relay, 18-year-old Greek Alpine skier Giannis Antoniou.

Ice hockey star and Sochi 2014 Ambassador Alexander Ovechkin became the first Russian torchbearer of the relay as the Olympic flame begun its journey to Sochi for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, following its lighting in Ancient Olympia, Greece.

Following the visit of the Olympic Torch Relay to the Kabardino-Balkar Republic, the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee is pleased to announce that, as part of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay, the Olympic Flame has been lit at the peak of the highest point in Europe - Mt. Elbrus, which is located in the Kabardino-Balkar Republic.
