1976: John Walker of New Zealand (black jersey) runs with a pack of racers before pulling away and capturing the gold medal in the men's 1500m event at the 1976 Summer Olympic Games in Montreal, Canada. Walker raised the profile of middle distance running in the seventies and eighties, but never realised his true potential in the Olympic arena because of injury and the 1980 boycott . He won the 1500 metres at the Montreal Games and became the first man to run the mile in under 3 min 50 seconds in August 1975. Ten years later, he ran the mile in under four minutes for the 100th time, the first man to do so. Mandatory Credit: Allsport UK/Allsport
