Sylvio DE MAGALHAES PADILHA

Sylvio Padilha competed in athletics at the 1936 Olympics and was a monumental figure in Brazilian athletics. He usually captained the national team and between at the South American Championships from 1931-45 he won the 400 hurdles three times, the 110 hurdles once, the 400 flat once and several relay titles. He won Brazilian titles in the 100 and 200 metres, and the 110 and 400 metre hurdles.

Padilha became better known as a Brazillian sports administrator. He served as President of the Brazilian National Olympic Committee from 1963-90, and was also President and Vice-President of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO). Padilha was an IOC Member from 1964-95. He was on the Executive Board in 1970-74 and 1983-88, serving as Vice-President of the IOC from 1975-79. He was a member of multiple IOC Commissions, as follows: Joint Commission (1968-71), Olympic Programme (1972-74), Enquiry for Rhodesia (1973-75), Tripartite (1975-78), Council of the Olympic Order (1975-78), Commission for Greece (1980-81), Olympic Movement (1983-88), and Eligibility (1989-90).
