Biografia

Philippe Cattiau won eight Olympic medals during his five appearances at the Olympic Games, with three team gold medals, including winning gold in both team foil and épée in 1932. Cattiau learned fencing from his father who was a fencing master sergeant with the 47th infantry regiment. At the World Championships, Cattiau won the individual épée in 1929 and 1920 and added two silver medals in individual foil in 1927 and 1929. He won another two gold medals in team épée in 1934-3 and won two silver medals in team foil in 1930 and 1937. In 1946 Cattiau took over from Lucien Mérignac as director of the fencing hall of the ACF (French Automobile Club), a position he held until his death in 1962. After his retirement from competition in 1939 he later coached the French national foil and épée teams.
