Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour’s journey in gymnastics began in France at 4 years old but quickly progressed. At age 11, she made her international debut, competing at the 2017 Tournoi International. She finished 16th in the all-around at the competition in the espoir division.
As a junior athlete, Nemour dealt with numerous setbacks, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic which limited her training.
In 2022, the 16-year-old was eligible for senior international competitions but a knee injury and disagreements with the French Gymnastics Federation held her out of all but one competition that season: the Arab Championships in October 2022.
The Arab Championships served as both her senior competitive debut and the first time she would compete for Algeria, the country of her father. She claimed two golds (team, uneven bars) and a silver (balance beam) at the event.
2023 proved to be a historic year for Nemour, who won all-around gold at the African Championships to qualify to the 2023 World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium.
