Joe Patterson competed for the US Naval Academy and the U.S. Navy. He finished second in the 1936 Olympic Trial in the 400H. He became a career Navy officer but it was a brief career as he was killed after the crash of the submarine Squalus off the coast of Portsmouth, NH in May 1939.
