As an amateur boxer, Giorgio Bambini was a four-time Italian Champion, winning the title in 1965-68, defeating Mario Baruzzi in the finals three consecutive times from 1965-67, and then beating Aldo Piccinali in 1968 for his fourth title. Bambini was 1967 Mediterranean Games heavyweight champion. Considered a medal favorite at the 1968 Olympics, Bambini made it to the semi-finals, but was no match there for eventual gold medalist and professional World Champion George Foreman. Bambini also turned pro after the 1968 Olympics, and fought professionally from 1969-71. He never fought outside of Italy and retired after 15 bouts, despite the fact that he was never beaten, winning five bouts by knockout. He never boxed for any major professional titles.
