Erwin was the nephew of Gustav and the father of Norman Casmir. He dominated the fencing scene in Germany in the 1920s like no other. Beside his three Olympic medals he was 52 (!!) times German Champion in all three weapons (foil, epée and sabre), of which 23 were in individual events. In 1928, at Amsterdam, he won the silver medal in the individual foil. In 1932 he came in fifth in the individual foil and fourth in the individual sabre, and again a fourth place in the individual foil. In 1936 he claimed two team bronze in the foil and the sabre.
From 1949-82 he was a member of the German NOC. From 1949-57 he was president of the German Fencing Association, also from 1935-45 member of the Deutscher Olympischer Ausschuss (the NOC of Deutsches Reich). By profession, he was a general representant of a well-known German insurance company. In 2008 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of German Sports.
