Antti TYRVÄINEN

Antti Tyrväinen, an officer of the Finnish Army, made his international début as a biathlete at the 1960 Olympic Winter Games, where biathlon was contested at the Olympics for the first time. At Squaw Valley Tyrväinen won a silver medal behind Swede Klas Lestander in the individual 20 km, while in 1961 he won his only World Championship, in the relay, while finishing fifth in the individual event. At both the 1962 and 1963 World Championships Tyrväinen won silvers in both the relay and individual 20 km race. Tyrväinen also competed at the 1964 Olympic Winter Games, but not very successfully and he made his last World Championships appearance in 1965, where he won bronze in the relay. Tyrväinen also competed in shooting and at the 1963 European Championships won an individual bronze in free rifle, three positions and team silver in the military rifle, three positions event. That year he also won a gold in the military rifle, three positions event at the Military World Championships, while setting a World record in the kneeling position. Tyrväinen won silver at the 1965 Nordic Championships in the free rifle, three positions and was tenth at the 1967 World Championships in free rifle, prone position.
