Antônio Lira was a shot putter who competed at the 1932 and 1936 Olympics, without making a fair throw, but was a Brazilian and South American champion. Lira was a military man who became a general in the Brazilian army, and had a brother who was a minister in the Brazilian government. Antônio Lira spent many years as commander of the Escola de Educação Física do Exército. In 1963, Lira was attacked, shot and killed by a young man who was upset with Brazil’s government.
