From lighting the flame in Olympia to the final torchbearer setting fire to the cauldron in the stadium, find out all there is to know about an often overlooked journey that sets the stage for every Games.
This workshop gives students the opportunity to discover the importance of the Olympic flame and the torches that transport it during the Torch Relay. Students will explore the history of this tradition from its lighting in Olympia, the birthplace of the ancient Games, to the Opening Ceremony. Games, discussions and activities will take them right to the heart of Olympism and its values by linking history, sport and culture.
During this workshop, students will explore:
- The history of the Torch Relay and Olympic flame.
- The inner workings of the Torch Lighting Ceremony in Olympia and Torch Relay.
- The purpose and symbolism of this tradition, particularly the link between fire and peace as well as the symbolic importance of the final torchbearers.
- The key to understanding the design of Olympic torches.
